Everything a student (or parent) needs to register on the National Scholarship Portal and submit a pre-matric application before the 31 August 2026 deadline — in plain English and Urdu.

📖 Why this one form matters
Her father runs a small tailoring shop. The school fee is manageable, but books, uniform and bus money pile up every term. A government pre-matric scholarship will not make the family rich — but it takes real weight off one shoulder, and it teaches her something bigger: that there is a system, it has a form, and she can work it herself. The only thing standing between her and that money is a portal called NSP, one registration called OTR, and a deadline: 31 August.
The National Scholarship Portal (NSP) at scholarships.gov.in is the Government of India's single window for most central scholarship schemes — pre-matric (school, classes 9–10), post-matric (after Class 10), and merit-cum-means schemes for higher studies. One portal, one registration, many schemes. The portal for the 2026–27 cycle opened on 1 June 2026, and applications for pre-matric schemes close on 31 August 2026.
One honest caveat before we start: deadlines on NSP are sometimes extended, and scheme rules can change between years. Treat every date and rule in this guide as “confirm it on scholarships.gov.in before you rely on it.” This article explains the process; the portal is always the final word.

📅 The dates and numbers to memorise
Why start now instead of the last week of August? Because the application is a chain: Aadhaar must be linked to a mobile number, OTR needs face authentication through an app, the income certificate takes days at the tehsil office, and the portal itself slows down badly near deadlines. Each link takes time; the last week is when every link breaks at once.

✅ Who can apply for pre-matric (2026–27)?
Pre-matric schemes on NSP now cover Classes 9 and 10 only. Classes 1–8 were removed because free schooling for those classes is already covered under the Right to Education Act. The two most common central pre-matric schemes are:
🕌 Pre-Matric Scholarship for Minorities (Ministry of Minority Affairs)
For students of the six notified minority communities — Muslim, Christian, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain and Parsi. Classes 9–10, family income up to ₹1 lakh per year, and the student should have scored at least 50% in the previous final exam. Studying in a government or recognised private school — including recognised madrasas — counts.
📋 Pre-Matric Scholarship for SC Students (Ministry of Social Justice)
For Scheduled Caste students in Classes 9–10. The income ceiling is higher than the minority scheme (check the current scheme guidelines on NSP for the exact figure and your state's rules).
🗺️ State schemes too
Many states run their own pre-matric schemes for OBC, EBC, ST and other categories — some through NSP, some through separate state portals (UP Scholarship, SSP Karnataka, and others). If your category isn't covered centrally, check your state's scholarship portal — the documents you prepare for NSP work there too.
Class 5–8 parent reading this? Don't close the tab. The OTR you create for an elder sibling teaches you the whole process, and your younger child will need the same Aadhaar-mobile linking and income certificate when they reach Class 9. The paperwork you fix now is never wasted.

🗂️ The documents checklist — get these ready first
Ninety percent of failed applications die here, not on the portal. Collect these before you touch the website:
🪪 Aadhaar — linked to a working mobile number
This is non-negotiable. OTR verification runs on an OTP sent to the Aadhaar-linked mobile. If the linked number is lost or was never set, visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra first — that fix alone can take days, which is why you start in June, not August.
🧾 Income certificate from a revenue authority
Issued in the parent/guardian's name by a Tehsildar, SDM or equivalent revenue officer. Self-declarations and letters from private employers are not accepted for the minority pre-matric scheme. Apply at your tehsil office or state e-district portal early.
🏦 Bank account — ideally Aadhaar-seeded
Scholarship money comes by Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). An account in the student's name (or joint with a parent, for minors, as per scheme rules) that is linked to Aadhaar avoids the most common payment failure.
📄 Previous class marksheet
The minority pre-matric scheme asks for at least 50% marks in the previous final exam. Keep a clear scan or photo of the marksheet.
🏫 School details + Bonafide certificate
You'll select your school/madrasa from NSP's list of registered institutes, so know its exact registered name. Schools often issue a bonafide/study certificate to support the application.
📷 Passport photo + community declaration
A recent photo, and — for the minority scheme — a self-declaration of community (format available via the school or the portal). A disability certificate is needed only if applying under a disability quota.

🔐 What exactly is OTR — and the step-by-step registration
One Time Registration (OTR) is NSP's identity layer. You do it once, it verifies you against Aadhaar, and it gives you a permanent 14-digit OTR ID that you reuse every year, for every scheme, through your whole student life. Without OTR you cannot open any application form. Here is the full sequence:
Open scholarships.gov.in → Students → One Time Registration
Use the official portal only — scholarships.gov.in. Ignore lookalike websites and “agents”. Read the OTR instructions page and tick the declarations.
Enter Aadhaar (or Enrolment ID) and verify with OTP
Type the student's 12-digit Aadhaar number — or the Aadhaar Enrolment ID (EID) if Aadhaar is still being made. An OTP goes to the Aadhaar-linked mobile. For minors, a parent/guardian's consent step appears.
Fill the basic profile
Name, date of birth, state, category/community, contact details — exactly as they appear on Aadhaar. Mismatched spellings cause verification failures later.
Install the two apps for face authentication
From Google Play: NSP OTR (official, by NIC) and AadhaarFaceRD (by UIDAI). No fingerprint device or CSC visit needed — your phone camera is the biometric device.
Complete face authentication
In the NSP OTR app, choose “Face Authentication” and enter your reference number. AadhaarFaceRD opens automatically: good light, face the camera, blink when asked, hold still. On success you're sent back to NSP.
Receive your 14-digit OTR ID
It arrives by SMS on the registered mobile. Write it in the front of a school notebook AND save it in the phone. This one number is your scholarship identity for years.
Log in and start the actual application
Back on the portal (or the NSP mobile app), log in with the OTR ID + OTP, click “Apply for Scholarship”, and pick your scheme — e.g. Pre-Matric Scholarship for Minorities.

📝 Filling the application form without mistakes
After OTR, the application form itself is mostly careful copying. The parts that actually reject people:
🏫 Institute selection
Search your school/madrasa by its registered name and district. If it doesn't appear, it may not be registered on NSP for this cycle — tell your head teacher immediately; the school-side registration (KYC) is their job, and no institute means no application.
📤 Uploads
Scan documents clearly (a phone scan in daylight works). Match the size/format limits shown on the form. A blurry income certificate is the most common verification rejection.
🔍 Review before Final Submit
Once you press Final Submit you cannot casually edit. Check spellings against Aadhaar, the bank account number digit by digit, and the class/year fields. Then submit — and note the application ID.
After submitting, tell your school the same day. Your application now sits in the Institute Nodal Officer's queue. Schools verify dozens of applications; the students who politely follow up are the ones whose forms don't expire unverified.

🛤️ What happens after you submit
Your form travels through three levels of verification — Institute (INO), then District (DNO), then State (SNO) — before payment is processed as a Direct Benefit Transfer into the bank account. You can track status anytime by logging in with your OTR ID. If something is marked “defective”, it usually means a document needs re-uploading — fix it fast, don't wait.
Beware of “scholarship agents”
NSP has no fees, no agents, and no paid “fast track”. Anyone asking for money to “approve” your scholarship, or asking for your OTP, is running a scam. The portal is free, and the helpdesk is official: 0120-6619540 (8 AM–8 PM, except government holidays) and helpdesk@nsp.gov.in.

🕌 A note for madrasa students and their teachers
Students of recognised madrasas are squarely inside the minority pre-matric scheme — the form has space for madrasa students like any other school student. Two things decide whether that works in practice: the madrasa must be registered on NSP as an institute (with its own nodal officer), and someone there must verify applications on time. If you teach at a madrasa, becoming the Institute Nodal Officer for your students may be the highest-leverage hour of paperwork you do all year. If you're a student and your madrasa isn't registered, show this article to your teacher — this month, not in August.

⚠️ The five mistakes that cost students their scholarship
1️⃣ Starting in the last week of August
Portal congestion + tehsil queues + face-auth retries = missed deadline. Start the OTR this week.
2️⃣ Aadhaar not linked to any mobile
The OTP has nowhere to go, and fixing it needs an Aadhaar Seva Kendra visit. Check this first, before anything else.
3️⃣ Name spelled differently on Aadhaar, marksheet and form
Verification compares them. Use the Aadhaar spelling everywhere on the form, and get genuine mismatches corrected at the source.
4️⃣ Wrong or unseeded bank account
The application may pass every check and the payment still fails. Confirm the account is active and Aadhaar-seeded for DBT.
5️⃣ Never telling the school
An unverified application is a rejected application. Follow up with the Institute Nodal Officer until your status shows “verified”.
