This is the path that actually works for self-taught learners in India (based on freeCodeCamp, Dataquest, Power BI Studio, and WhiteScholars roadmaps — cross-referenced). The order matters. Don't skip Excel to "look cooler".
Excel — 3 weeks
The on-ramp. Every analytics job uses Excel daily. Master pivot tables, XLOOKUP/INDEX-MATCH, conditional formatting, and basic charts. Do the Maven Analytics free Excel course.
SQL — 4 weeks
The most-tested skill in data interviews. SELECT, WHERE, GROUP BY, JOINs, subqueries, then window functions. Work through the freeCodeCamp 11-hour SQL course and practise on SQLZoo + Kaggle Intro to SQL.
Power BI + DAX — 5 weeks

This section is for the learner I know best — the student who reads Arabic and Urdu with ease, finished a madarsa or a small-town college, and wonders whether a world of data and dashboards can really be theirs.
Yes — but not because it's easy, and not because data analytics is magic. Because the analytical skills you already have from dars-e-nizami, from memorising matn and studying fiqh and arguing about qiyas, transfer directly to data work. Logical decomposition, systematic attention to detail, comfort with abstract rules, patience with long texts — that's 60% of what a data analyst does every day. The other 40% (Excel, SQL, Power BI) is learnable in 4-6 months.

Day 1 — Install Power BI Desktop
Download free from powerbi.microsoft.com/desktop. If you don't have Windows, sign up for Looker Studio (free, browser-based).
Day 2 — Start freeCodeCamp 11-hour SQL course
On YouTube. Watch the first 2 hours. Take notes in Urdu or English — whichever feels natural.
Day 3 — Create a Kaggle account + start Intro to SQL
kaggle.com/learn. Complete first 3 lessons. You'll get a free certificate.
Day 4 — Pick one dataset + one question
From data.gov.in or Kaggle. Example: "How has Indian fuel price changed by state over 5 years?"
Day 5 — Build your first chart
In Power BI or Looker Studio. One question, one chart, one insight. That's it. It doesn't have to be pretty.
Day 6 — Update your LinkedIn headline
Use the tool-explicit pattern from Section 7. Add the "Open to Work" badge. Target: 5 quality connection requests to data people in India.
Day 7 — Write your first LinkedIn post
Two paragraphs. "This week I started learning data analytics. Here's what I built on Day 5…" Tag one YouTube channel that helped you. Post it. This single post starts your learning-in-public journey.
The magic of Day 7: the moment you post publicly, you stop being a silent consumer of tutorials and become a visible learner. Recruiters, peers, and future employers all respond to visible consistency more than to credentials. Start the visibility early.
